Red Cross Journey update

Red Cross Journey

Over the next two weeks Room 5 will be supporting the Red Cross initiative to raise money and awareness of the plight of refugees around the world. Rooms 5 and 15 will work closely together to reach our target of $1000 raised. Using pedometers we will be calculating our steps each day and recording them on our page. We are geographically following the trip a young family with children made to escape their war torn country.

EUREKA! Plant and Dye

We are learning about the features of a plant. We put a white flower in some food colouring to learn about how water moves around a flower. Here are some photos of what happened. We learnt that the water is drawn up inside the flower through the stem
The beginning.

 After 10 minutes the small flowers have started turning pink.

After 20 minutes, the small flowers are much pinker.

After 30 minutes the small flowers are very pink and have drawn up a lot of the dye.

After 24 hours the large white flower is pink and the small flowers are bright red. We talked about the size of the stem and the flower which meant the smaller flowers got the dye into their petals earlier.

Move Mprove

Every Monday morning this term, Room 5 students will be involved in Move Mprove. This programme teaches spacial awareness as well as coordination, balance and safe landings. Here are some photos from recent sessions.

Numicon Maths

This term Room 5 are using the Numicon programme in Maths. Today we completed a series of problem solving tasks which focused on using a range of pieces of equipment to cover a 100 base board. We started with 10 tiles, then included the 5 tiles - students were able to identify how these worked together, then we introduced (6, 4), (2, 8) and (3, 7) and (9, 1) tiles.

In this task the students learnt patterns to 10, 10x, 2x, area and number patterns to 100. Here are some photos from this task. It would be great if you chatted to your child about this learning, it was awesome!
